When people refer to digital signage, they are referring quite simply to ‘digital signs’. Digital Signage refers to the use of electronic digital displays driven by media players used to strategically broadcast advertising or rich, dynamic and engaging multimedia content to a fine-grained target audience in an eye-catching way.
You are seeing this emerging technology more and more because no other medium makes it possible to deliver dynamic content at the right location at the right time for maximum impact. In essence – digital signage systems allow you to reach your target audience in real-time and communicate in a powerful, vibrant and effective way.
Digital signage gives you the opportunity to benefit from the advantages of traditional advertising while crossing technological boundaries by using video, animation and design elements to create digital imagery that brings your imagination to life.
Digital Signage and Digital Out-Of-Home (DOOH) comes in a variety of formats, sizes and is used for numerous purposes; in this section, we have identified the core applications:
Advertise. Digital Signage has a proven track record in influencing consumer-purchasing decisions and delivering uplift in sales. Digital Signage enables advertisers to increase brand and product awareness, inform customers at the point of sale, drive sales within specific areas, target promotions, drive traffic to store departments and reduce the cost of printed materials. Digital signage needs to be regarded as an important part of the marketing mix if a retailer wants to ensure maximum revenue. Digital signage can also be a revenue generator. Advertising space can be sold to your suppliers or third parties who already understand that it pays to have the right shelf slot in a store. They will be willing to pay to run their ads on your in-store digital signage system.
Inform. Being able to inform customers, target audiences and staff with live up-to-date information is crucial to any business and can be a difficult task. Digital displays can be used to effectively deliver streamlined information and show up-to-date travel information, maps, directions, promotions, events, weather, news, sports coverage, stock market updates, and any other information that the target audience might want or need. In the transportation industry, research has proven that with the use of digital displays to inform customers it can help reduce the workload for staff, since fewer passengers are asking questions.
Build Brands. Branding is an important way to increase public recognition of your business or product. It can help you engage with customers and create a connection. Building a brand image, increasing awareness, reinforcing corporate identity and developing a community remain important parts of any business. Whether it is in-store, at the office or at exhibitions, if the aim is to build and promote your brand, using digital signage displays is a powerful method of highlighting your corporate logos and identity.
Communicate. Most companies face a similar challenge when trying to disseminate information to employees and customers: getting the right information to the right people at the right time. Digital Signage is an effective means to communicate to both internal and external staff as well as visitors and customers. Digital displays can show information, which is up-to-date, interesting and available for everyone. For instance, digital signage systems can be used to create welcoming messages for visitors in the reception area. It gives you the opportunity to welcome visitors and parties to the premises. Displaying specific names of individuals or groups will personalise your welcoming messages. The very benefits of digital signage systems fit perfectly with the need to deliver different messages to different audiences.
Enhance. Digital Signage systems can be used to enhance working, business and public environments and consequently improve the customer or public total experience. In environments where queuing and waiting is commonplace, such as banks and hospitals, digital signage platforms can be used to entertain and interest observers, which in turn reduce the customer / patient perceived waiting time. For businesses of all sizes, attending an exhibition or trade show is the perfect platform for communicating with potential customers. Digital signage is a brilliant method of audio-visual display to provide a more compelling message than simple static graphics making it a great way to give a company presence to stand out from the crowd.
There are many benefits of digital signage but here are just a few to help you see how it could help your business:
- Increase the impact of your message through rich, vibrant, eye catching, and engaging and even interactive dynamic content.
- Instead of one static image, digital signage can highlight many items and feature multiple slides or dynamic graphics to capture the attention of customers.
- Research has shown that current generations of children and young adults are more receptive to the use of technology when compared with more traditional communications such as poster boards.
- Research has shown that digital signage is also better at delivering memorable information, when compared to newsletters, email, intranets or bulletin boards.
Update Content Instantly
- Content can be controlled and updated in real-time, usually from a single location.
- Through having the ability to change key messages instantly across your network enables you to react at short notice and overcome many of the problems faced by using other traditional media methods.
- Increase relevancy by eliminating out of date messages.
- Target the right people in the right location and at the right time for maximum impact.
- This flexibility lets you take advantage of time and season-specific promotions, maximising potential and revenues in busy periods.
- Eliminate the need to print and distribute static posters or signs each time your message or campaign changes.
- Reduces the time and cost to position new messages.
- Delivers superior return on investment (ROI) when compared with the print / production and distribution costs of posters / static signs.
Easy to Implement, Use and Manage
- There is no longer a learning curve to overcome for non-technical staff. User-friendly editing tools and menu-based systems give everyday staff the ability to update content with little training. Training can be given in just hours and not days.
- There are a variety of content management options and ready-made templates that give even non-creative people the power to develop truly professional-looking presentations.
- Using networked control management systems; all of your displays around the World can be controlled from one central location ensuring quality and consistency.
- Networked solutions can be easily scalable from one digital display to thousands.
An Extra Source of Income
- Sell your new advertising medium to third parties and create a new revenue stream for your business.
Digital signage is a technology beneficial and accessible to all; it is a good option for you if you have a message you want to get across to potential customers, need to change your message or promotion frequently, or need to engage people while they wait in line. Digital signage can complement your static signs and provides a great way to educate, inform and entertain viewers using motion graphics and colour.
Digital signage captures the attention of current and potential customers, and provides them with valuable, engaging content. This enables you to effectively communicate with them. Digital signage not only informs and engages more people through creative presentation, but also reaches them instantly and reliably – and messages can be updated or retired in real-time. It is a modern approach to corporate communications that draws in viewers with bright, animated graphics and interactivity. With traditional advertising becoming less and less effective, digital signage is a fantastic alternative, which is flexible, scalable, easy to use and more cost-effective in the long term.
A few facts to be aware of … according to ‘Nielsen Studies’, digital signage can deliver a 30% uplift in sales if used correctly in retail environments; according to the ‘IAB’, digital signage can increase engagement by up to 75%.
Digital signage is being used indoors and outdoors across all major sectors including commercial, industrial, public sector, construction, education, healthcare, hospitality, retail, travel and infrastructure.
